Joanie Davis, Au.D., F-AAA, CCC-A

What university did you attend for graduate school and what year did you graduate?

West Virginia University, 2008

Where do you currently work and what are your specialties?

Davis Family Hearing. We see all age groups from newborn to geriatric. We specialize in hearing aid dispensing, cochlear implants, aural rehabilitation, tinnitus, and hearing conservation.

Why did you become an audiologist?

As an audiologist, we have the best job in the world! We get to take an extremely frustrating problem that has left many people hopeless, emotional, and discouraged and give them a significantly improved quality of life. I became an audiologist to make a difference, and I can honestly say that I feel that I do that multiple times throughout the day every single day.

What is your favorite part of Audiology?

The amazing difference an Audiologist can make in another person’s life is incredible and often underestimated. Hearing loss is a hidden disability, and depression, isolation, and anxiety can often accompany it. Patients often tell me how much better they feel with significantly more energy at the end of the day after treating their hearing losses. Patients are able to get their personalities back, and re-connect with friends and loved ones. All of that can happen just by treating hearing loss.

Why did you join FLAA?

The Florida Academy of Audiology supports Florida audiologists through lobbying efforts and continuing education, while connecting us with other professionals and organizations. FLAA holds a state convention every year that I make sure I go to. Not only does it serve my continuing education needs, but it also connects me to other professionals. I leave every year feeling invigorated about my profession and armed with new tools to implement in my practice.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love spending time with my children: Emma, 2 years old and Jimmy, 7 months old. I also enjoy exploring all of the wonderful adventures that Florida has to offer with my husband, James. We enjoy the beach, hiking, and boating, just to name a few of the activities Florida specializes in.

How can people contact you?

I can be reached at 352-666-8910 or via email at davisfamilyhearing@gmail.com.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is supervising students who are completing their 4th year externships. These students are the future of our profession, and I want them to feel energized about all of the wonderful opportunities Audiology has to offer. The key to building our profession is to unite toward common goals, and I like to emphasize teamwork over competition. We can accomplish more together as a group than as individuals, and I feel proud to be a part of this awesome profession!
