Why did you become an audiologist?
My interest in healthcare, and more specific audiology, began when I was a high school senior working in my father’s ENT office in Birmingham, Alabama. The University of Alabama – Birmingham Medical Center was across the street from the VA medical Center. Employed as a clinic carrier, my job was to hand deliver reports from one clinic to another. During my daily trips to each facility, I got to know several of the audiologist. This piqued my first interest in hearing healthcare.
As an undergraduate student I volunteered on weekends as an audiology clinical assistant at the UAB Medical School, Department of Otolaryngology. I liked the combination of clinical science and working with individuals of all ages, thus deciding on audiology as a career.
What is your favorite part of Audiology?
I’ve been blessed for almost 35 years to work in a profession that is still evolving. This journey has allowed me to meet some amazing people that have influenced my career. I will forever be grateful to my professors, colleagues, and friends at the University of Alabama, University of Florida, and Mayo Clinic. The opportunities we have every day to educate and treat patients with hearing and/or balance problems is self-gratifying.
Why did you join FLAA?
FLAA is a tremendous professional organization where you can network with other colleagues and friends throughout the State. The annual conference provides a unique opportunity for learning and sharing ideas in an ever changing profession.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Spending time with my amazing bride of 34 years, Cindy. We also like to travel and often visit our son, Chris, who is employed by the Orlando Magic.
